|The island became an imperial colony in 1509 when Spain conquered the Indigenous Arawak people. In 1655, British forces took the island with hardly a fight, and the British Empire claimed it. Jamaica was an English colony from 1655, and a British Colony from 1707. Jamaica became a Crown colony in 1866.|
The population in 1834 was 371,070. This period was marked by an economic slump, with many Jamaicans living in poverty. Dissatisfaction with this, and continued racial discrimination and marginalisation of the black majority, led to the outbreak of the Morant Bay rebellion in 1865 led by Paul Bogle, which was put down by Governor John Eyre with such brutality that he was recalled from his position.
Jamaica was the first British colony to establish a post office: in 1671 shortly after British possession of the island was confirmed.
